Honorary Chair

Alicia Landry and family of the late Tom Landry

Named by ESPN as one of the Greatest Coaches in NFL History, Tom Landry was a hero to all. He served in the Army Air Forces in World War II, then later enrolled in the University of Texas, where he resumed playing fullback and some quarterback and defensive back for the Longhorns football team. Before graduating with a degree in business administration from the University of Texas; he met freshman, Alicia on a blind date in September 1947 and married two years later. He became head coach of the Dallas Cowboys 10 years later, something for which Alicia takes credit. It was also her idea that "Tommy," as she calls Landry, wear a fedora. It became Landry's trademark. In the 1970s, the team gained national popularity and was dubbed "America's Team.” Super Bowl VI, in which the Tom Landry's Dallas Cowboys beat the Miami Dolphins 24-3, marked a turning point for the team. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1990 and was inducted into the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor in 1993. In May 1999, Landry began undergoing treatment for acute myelogenous leukemia and later lost his battle with the disease the following February at age 75. Mrs. Alicia Landry survives him along with their children, Tom Landry, Jr. and Kitty Phillips. The couple also had another daughter, Lisa Childress, who died of cancer in 1995.

Mr. and Mrs. Landry were the couple that always had Thursday Date Night, even during football season.  We hope you will join us on Thursday October 9th to honor this beloved family and celebrate as we fight for a cure.
